What a wonderful day beside the Ovens River at Porepunkah last Sunday. A great group of 30 enthusiastic volunteers marked National Tree Planting Day by planting 400 trees and shrubs along the banks of the Ovens River, near its junction with One Mile Creek. It was encouraging to see many new families in attendance.
We planted a wide range of indigenous species sourced and grown locally by Alpine Nursery at Ovens including: Eucalyptus camaldulensis (River Red gum); Eucalyptus camphora (Mountain Swamp Gum); Eucalyptus radiata (Narrow-leaved Peppermint); Callistemon sieberi (River Bottlebrush); Leptospermum brevipipes (Slender Tea-tree); Acacia melanoxylon (Blackwood); Prostanthera lasianthos (Victorian Christmas Mint bush); The Narrow-leaved Peppermint being a species we are targeting as a food source for our endangered Gang Gang Cockatoos.
The Lancare Group supplied a barbecue lunch and, as usual, a couple of members supplied delicious home-made cakes.
A huge thank you to all the volunteers, your energy made a big task so much easier. Also, thanks to Dale Tunstall, from Globalgreen Environmental, for his support with our new 100% biodegradable tree guards.
This project is supported by a grant from the Bendigo Bank and assistance from The North East Catchment Management Authority.
