Omeo Gum (Eucalyptus neglecta) is classified as rare in Victoria and is considered endangered at a national level. Its conservation status reflects its restricted distribution in the wild, primarily in high-country river flats in Victoria. The Upper Buckland is one of a few sites in eastern Victoria high Country where it occurs. Significant stands were burnt in the 2019/20 fires. UOVLG sought funding to replant Omeo Gum in the Upper Buckland Valley to assist its recovery as a species.
Seed collected was from Beveridges Camping Area; Alpine National Park in 2021 and plants propagated by Mt Hotham Nursery, Ovens. Nine plots of about 100 m3 were fenced to protect the trees from grazing cattle and feral deer and, in August 2022,1000 trees were planted.
