Yesterday, Landcare volunteers made the most of a sunny morning planting 60 trees on the banks of the Ovens River, near its junction with the Buckland River, at Porepunkah.
Very enthusiastic volunteers fought their way through a jungle of native grasses and reeds to our planting areas beside the river. The group planted 45 trees, mostly Red Gums, along the riverbank and 10 at the Porepunkah Primary School block, where deer had damaged some trees.
For close to ten years, the Upper Ovens Valley Landcare Group, in partnership with NECMA, DELWP (now DEECA) and several committed local residents, has undertaken extensive woody weed control and revegetation (6,000+ trees and shrubs) on both sides of the Ovens River. Many of the trees have reached five or six metres height at this site.
